My friend just informed me about Marshmello’s new song featuring Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh Khan is often titled King of Bollywood with an impressive track record staring in nearly 90 films and producing of a plethora of others. The singer is Pritam, a very well know singer, musician, and composer.
The first time viewing the music video I was astounded by the song and the entire production. I was admittedly distracted and talking to my friend in the excitement that Marshmello is in a Hindi song, but I did notice the iconic “Dola Re Dola” dance movies from Devdas.
Unfortunately, I had missed the art of the entire music video. The video takes you on a journey that spans decades. The video pays homage to seven of movies that starred the King of Bollywood.
The introduction of the video is similar to Om Shanti Om’s song “Aankohn Mein Teri“. The movie told a story of love that transcends time. We see a red carpet scene and then we witness the viewers who visualize themselves on screen.
The screen transitions from Om Shanti Om to Marshmello imagining himself on screen in a Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. This is the first time we see the female Marshmello, who I have endearingly named Marshmellete. Similar to the song “Tujhe Dekha To Ye Jaana Sanam“, Marshmello is dancing with Marshmellete in a field of red flowers, instead of the iconic field of yellow flowers. We also see Marshmello striking Shah Rukh Khan’s signature open arms pose.
Marshmellete transitions into dancing the “Maar Dala” and along with Marshmello they quickly transition to the “Dola Re Dola” dance that I could not miss even the first time I viewed it. The story, based on a Bengali novel of the same name, follows star cross lovers named Devdas and Paro on their heart-wrenching journey. Although, two big differences in this version is that Paro is driven to drinking rather than Devdas and that she was drinking milk as opposed to alcohol. Hopefully, this means they have a happy ending this time around?
The scene transitions into a basketball court where they do the moves from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’s “Ladki Badi Anjaani Hai“. It ends with Rahul and Anjali’s handshake as seen in “Yeh Ladka Hai Deewana“, but Marshmello and Marshmellete are confused on how to end it because they do not have a nose.
The train from the film Dil Se.., a romatic thriller, appears. Marhsmellete dances like the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya“.
It seems they saved my personal favorite movies for last. Mohabbatien and Don 2. Mohabbatien is a film revolving 3 young men in search of love and a former student that faces the memory of this lost love. The violin and signature turtle neck for “Humko Humise Chura Lo” is seen in the video.
Lastly, we are blessed with a shimmy straight out of “Yeh Mera Dil“, from Don, an action-thriller.
The video closes out with one of the most iconic lines “Marshmello nam tho suna he hoga”. Which translates to “Marshmello. You must have heard the name?” This is an iconic line used in a Romatic-Comedy called, Dil To Pagal Hai.
We can only hope that Marshmello and Bollywood singers have more collaborations! The overall production of this song and video gets an A++ in my books.
