Kylie Jenner the Youngest Self-Made billionaire: An Acknowledgement of Privilege

A plethora of upset articles and general commentary are circulating the web since Kylie Jenner was titled the Youngest Self-Made Billionaire. She was awarded this classification on the merits that her money was not inherited. While she checks all the required boxes for this label, she started the race ahead of the normal population. What people forget is that is the nature of most successful people. (I want to point out that this is a general statement that does not apply to everyone.) Most people have a certain extent of privileges. For some it is consistent after school tutoring and access to a wide array of resources for others their privilege is simply a supporting individual. The issue with a person like Kylie Jenner being named Youngest Self-Made Billionaire is that we are painfully aware of many of the entitlements she has grown up with. Ranging from the fact that she bought a multi million dollar house but still did not know how to do laundry to the fact that she has access to the best well… everything.

Hairstylist , make-up artist, private’s tutors, florists, publicists, and anything you can imagine she has access to and we have seen on the show and through her social media what her day to day generally looks like. I mean for crying out-loud, her years worth of flower arrangements can pay for a bachelor degree and possibly postgrad also.

Students her age are stuck in a dingy computer lab coding away in hopes to be the Mark Zuckerberg, or at least something to reduce the burden of crippling debut. If anything this is expected of her given the opportunities and platform she has. Now it’s time to see her be a catalyst for the greater good and to transform into something more. Although, her title is technically correct, it is important to pay attention to the semantics that it implies.
